Herring Island and the Como Mansion

After the Moomba Parade we took a long walk along the Yarra River to Herring Island.  This island was created to help control flooding, and later dredge spoils were added to it.  Now it is a small sculpture park and the park service is working to establish native vegetation on the island.  You can take a small flat boat over to the island on weekends and some public holidays.    A small art gallery on the island features rotating exhibits.

Before crossing we had a casual lunch at the very busy café by the boat landing.  The café seemed to be frequented by a lot of cyclists, dog walkers, and families.  The menu focused on breakfast foods and my egg sandwich (chopped soft boiled eggs with spinach and cheese on pide bread) was quite good.

The Como Mansion sits uphill from the river.  The owner named it after Lake Como in Italy and now the whole area is known as Como. The house is sometimes open for guided tours, but we just walked around the gardens.  There was a nice looking café there in what used to be the horse stables.
